We all need to breathe to live, we can’t live long without it, but did you know that we don’t, in general, breathe very well?
That most of us use just a fraction of our lung capacity?
Did you know that poor breathing can contribute to a whole host of physical and mental health problems, and can affect brain performance, sleep, memory and more?
When you stop for a moment and think about the function of breath, it makes sense.
When we breathe we are providing oxygen which nourishes every single one of the estimated 37.2 TRILLION cells we have in our bodies.
If we are not breathing properly we are not taking in enough oxygen, nor are we getting rid of enough of the toxic waste, carbon dioxide.

When we breathe well, we
- lower the heart rate
- reduce blood pressure
- soothe the nervous system
- give out brains a chance to think clearly, and
- give ourselves space to respond rationally rather than react emotionally, reducing the changes of the soon to be regretted ‘knee jerk’ reaction
I am sure by now you can see why I could quite happily teach nothing but the breath.
As an ex smoking, ex drinking, ex depressed, anxious, angry stress-head asthmatic, I have learned to love and value my breath quite considerably over the last couple of years.
Learning to breathe well was DEFINITELY a significant factor in my recovery from addiction and misery.
I am pretty sure I would still be all of the above had I not learned to breathe correctly!
