Manage Stress with the Breath
I have often spoken and written about the power of the breath in recovery from addiction.
I know that learning to breathe correctly was absolutely fundamental for me in my recovery, as it gave me a set of tools that helped me manage stress and difficult emotions.
Often in recovery, it is the painfiul emotions and the stressful situations that trip us up, that make us run back to our comfort blanket, to our addictions.
We learn that this ‘helps’ us to relax, when what is really does is enables us to shut down those painful feelings, or that high level of stress.
As I learned, when numbing and hiding from problems and emotions is our only coping mechanism, there comes a time when that stops working, and you either have to increase the amount you numb and hide, or try something else.
Learning to breathe is another way manage stress and emotions, it gives us a way to break this habit.
Calm the Nervous System
The sympathetic nervous system is the ‘flight or fight’ response. This creates that high stressed senstation, gets the heart rate up, creates tension in the muscles, puts us on ‘red alert’. When we are in this state, we react from an emotional stance, rather than respond to a situation. This often leads us to making decisions that we may later regret. This decision could involve arguments, rash spending, road rage, shouting, anger, drinking, smoking, taking drugs etc.
When we breathe deeply and slowly, we calm the nervous system and restore the balance between the parasympathetic and sympathetic nervous system. The paraympathetic nervous system is the ‘rest and digest’ response. This keeps us calm, and gives us the emotional space to respond in a more rational manner to a situation that arises.
Relaxation and Sleep
This also helps us to relax better. A common problem amongst people in recovery is an inability to relax easily, particularly at bedime. Good breathing, and the accompanying relaxation of body and mind that this brings, helps us to sleep easier and better, waking refreshed and with more energy.
Focus the mind
Another common problem in addiction , and many other mental health problems, is an inability to focus the mind on anything for any length of time. Flittering thoughts and an inabillity to remain present to the moment is a problem many will identify with.
Through the breath we can learn to quieten the mind and be in the moment, allowing distracting thoughts to pass observed but not letting ourselves get drawn away from the task in hand. This practice is challenging, but the benefits seep out into daily life as we find that we are better able to be present in our day to day life.
