I spent the first 20 years or so of being an adult looking not much further in life than the next thing to consume.  The next drink, the next night out, the next holiday, gig, job, house, relationship.  I never had a clear plan for my life, or if I did they got put to one side as short term gratification always took priority.

Prior to recovery, the last time I had a clear plan for life what when I trained to be a primary school teacher.  I was going to leave Wales, hopefully the UK, preferably to France, Italy or Canada, and follow the work.  As life plans go, it was pretty vague, so it is maybe not surprising that, instead of a globetrotting life as a primary school teacher, I have spent the years since I graduated in the Rhondda valley, the place I grew up, where my parents and oldest friends also still live.

Without a clear vision for where you want to go, and a plan to execute it, you will most likely just drift in life.  As George Harrison sang, “If you don’t know where you’re going, any road will take you there”

I am by nature a fairly ‘floaty hippy’ type, prone to spontaneous decisions, procrastination and indecision.  It is a very frustrating way to live most of the time, although the spontaneity has led to some great adventures! What is doesn’t do, however, is help me get to live the life I dream about, the life I want and deserve to live.  In this life, I am in a powerful position to help many other people who are battling with stress and addiction, as well as ensuring my children and I can have the life of joy and freedom I know we deserve.

I am taking some powerful steps to change this and to create the life I want.  I am determined that 2018 will be the year that I head determinedly in the direction of my dreams. I have already achieved some life goals in the last few years without a clear plan, so I reckon when I operate with structure and a plan things will be epic!

The steps I am taking are simple but powerful steps that you too can incorporate into your life.

Get clear on what you want

It is impossible to get what you want if you don’t know who you are, and what you want out of life.  While my Yoga practice has brought me closer to understanding who I am, I have struggled with finding clarity on what i want for the last couple of years, after so many what feel like wasted years I have had a real sense of wanting to do all the things I haven’t done for the last 20!  This obviously isn’t possible, so I am narrowing my ambitions to the things that would make me feel most fulfilled now!  I have worked through Danielle LaPorte’s Desire Map to help me tune into how I really want to feel in life.  Funnily enough, freedom and adventure are pretty high on the list still, along with connection, love and joy.  Now to create a life in which I can have all these things every day!

Create a powerful vision

Robin Sharma, author of the beautiful ‘The Monk Who Sold his Ferrari’ is famous for his ‘brain tattoos’, powerful soundbites that remind us of his teachings, says ‘Everything is created twice, first in the mind, then in reality.  This is true of everything that humanity has created, and your life is no different.  You can meander from day to day, dealing with life as it comes at you, as many people do, or you can create a vision of your future that is so powerful that you have no choice but to make it a reality.  Creating your clear vision helps you to remember that powerful ‘WHY’, which, as Simon Sinek tells us is so important

Zero white space planning

When you don’t have a clear plan for your day, it is too easy to drift aimlessly, and get to the end of the day wondering what, if anything, you have achieved.  I know that this has happened to me many times in the past, and is a source of great frustration.

These are just three strategies you can use to help you create the life you want to live.  Central to all my goals in life is my yoga practice and study, which underpins everything else I do.  Tapas, the Niyama of discipline, is the personal trait I need to develop most to conquer the floaty hippy tendencies and stay focused on my personal and business goals.

What are you hoping to achieve in 2018, and how will you make it a reality?
