As a lifelong Beatles fan, there are many songs of theirs that I truly adore, and I always really struggle to pick a definitive favourite because there really is a song to suit every mood, and my favourite will depend on many factors.

I can usually narrow it down to a few faves though, and it is safe to say that this is one, A Day In The Life, and has been for many many years (my love for this predates any of my children being born, and the eldest will be 27 this year!)

It is a great reminder that the minutiae of life, the little things that we barely even notice we are doing, are of vital importance.

Lennon and McCartney could make an epic, breath stopping (for me at least) piece of music about going to work, and reading the news.

They were masters of documenting the ordinary and turning it into something majestic.

As well they might, because the ordinary IS majestic.

We tend to rush around from this task to that, this place to that, head down looking at our phones, barely noticing the world around us. And yet there is beauty and wonder to be found in the smallest moments.

Take a break from the whirl of daily life, and pause and look around you. Engage your senses. Close your eyes and focus on what you can hear, smell, taste. Open your eyes and really look at something, study the bark of a tree or watch the flow of the rain falling on the window.

Before you eat, pause and savour the smells, the look of the food, the textures. Chew each mouthful slowly, allowing your tastebuds to really experience the food you are eating.

When you walk, be mindful of the movements your body is making, feel the movement of the foot as you lift and lower it to the ground. Feel the swing of the arms, the motions of the muscles, feel the purpose in your walk.

When you are in conversation, really listen to what the other person is saying, be present to them and hear them. Stephen Covey, author of ‘The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People’ tells us Most people do not listen with the intent to understand; they listen with the intent to reply. Can you be the exception to that rule?

Pause throughout your day to notice the breath. This flow of air that gives you life is the first thing you did when you entered this world, and will be the last thing you ever do in this life, and, if you are like most people, you only notice it when there is a reason you can’t breathe so well. Try setting an alarm on your phone for every hour in your day, and on this hour, spend a moment taking 3 deep breaths, and being fully connected to, and grateful for, your breath.

End each day with a moment of gratitude. List at least 3 things you are grateful for that day.

When you stop and take the time to appreciate the little things in life, it is so much easier to appreciate the many gifts that you have in life, even when you might not feel that you have a lot.
